In January 2021, Uppsala University is establishing a new multidisciplinary graduate school in sustainable development. The main mission of the graduate school is to conduct research based on key social challenges. The research will include subjects such as changed energy systems, sustainable consumption, destinations development.

The global community faces many challenges – in environment and sustainable development, life and health, society and culture, security and peace, technological advances and innovation. This orientation also links issues related to future economic systems with the global sustainability goals and other frameworks for sustainable development. The course then goes on to deepen the discussion and shed light on the ecological, resource-based, social and cultural conditions and the foundations for a sustainable and equitable future economic system. The student can also take courses to get a more in-depth knowledge in sustainable development within the field of earlier studies, or in another field. The wide scope of competence with the Department of Earth Sciences together with interaction with Centre for Sustainable Development provide a strong base for research and education for sustainability, including both Earth Sciences and socio-political perspectives, allowing the maintenance of Uppsala’s traditional broad and very international perspective in this area. The University offers many relevant education programs, not least a Master program in Sustainable Development carried out Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) allows everyone to acquire the knowledge, skills, attitudes and values necessary to actively take part in shaping a sustainable future. ESD means including key sustainable development wicked issues – e.g. climate change, poverty reduction, disaster risk, sustainable consumption, refugees and biodiversity – into teaching and learning.

Uppsala University is the coordinator. The South Africa–Sweden University Forum (SASUF) involves 23 universities in South Africa and 7 in Sweden. At a first Research and Innovation Week in Pretoria in May, around 400 researchers, senior university officers, and representatives from research funding bodies and ministries will discuss sustainable development in Sweden and South Africa.
